For this next instalment, we feature Jclef — Winner of Best R&B + Soul Album of the Year at the 2019 Korean Music Award, and rightly so! Jclef's clever synthesis of consciousness in her music gives way to an extremely unique overall sound. Her use of dramatic melodies, imaginative vocals mixed with well-crafted production has resulted in a striking experimental performance piece. If the brilliant debut LP "Flaw Flaw" is any indication of her amazing talent and skills, then there’s no doubt she has a long and successful career ahead!
when did you get started in music?
I started when I was in University.
can you speak a little abot the seoul music scene?
It is hard to describe because I haven’t belonged to any specific industry. However, I can say that there are many kind-hearted people who support young musicians, especially those that are starting out. I feel that is so encouraging and touching.
DOES LIVING IN SEOUL AFFECT YOUR MUSIC IN ANY WAY?
During the daytime, Seoul is a bit of a chaos, whereas at dawn it is the most peaceful. For my personality, I don’t really like an overly crowded atmosphere. So the early mornings gives me a special meditative moment. Loneliness, rage, mixed thoughts are the results of those special meditative moments.
and personally, what is seoul to you?
It’s hard to define. High deposit, high rent, you have to give everything you’ve got. You have to survive by doing whatever you have to do. Sometimes I want to escape from Seoul.
HAS THERE BEEN AN IMPACTFUL MOMENT DURING YOUR CAREER YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT?
It is hard to pick ONLY one, but to me it’s more the relationships I’ve made so far. People, friends, investors that I’ve encountered along the way. There were many people who wanted to help with their kind heart when I was penniless. OPPA (Big Brother in Korean) Joong-Young, buddies at Biscuit Haus, and producers who like my music and people who like me the way that I am.
any special place you want to perform at?
Umm… I have no huge desire of performing live at this moment. Whoever wants to hear my music, I will do my very best to perform for them.
fair enough, what’s your plan for the future?
I don’t have any immediate plans. On my first album, I have already talked about my 26 years old life so far. After that, I will probably be prepping for my second album based on my own observation of myself.
