what does your creative process look like?

My typical process, which I try to change as often as possible by collaborating with new people or something, is sitting down with either a guitar or piano and working out chords and melodies, which often comes easily but then is quickly overtaken by the process of arranging and lyric writing. I also am almost always writing with Logic open so I can record/arrange right away.

What is your favorite part of this line of work?

There’s nothing quite like pulling something out of thin air, whether it be filling a blank page with images that did not exist before or filling the air with melody. I still get butterflies on a daily basis stepping my foot into such an abyss. Simultaneously, those same unknowns about music/career are also my least favorite thing about the lifestyle, there is no clear route to success with music and certainly no 5 steps to being a great artist.

Who are you inspired by?

Form aside, I’m most inspired by artists with a broad vision for what they are making...if we’re talking music, I hold artists like Bjork or Prince to the highest regard because of their limitless ability to not only create brand new forms of music but also represent themselves visually, produce/arrange their music and handle their business with integrity.

Who are you listening to right now?

Been digging into Chet Baker more, his voice and horn playing is so comparable it’s insane...super breathy, beautiful tone. Also, ROSALÍA, Mia Gladstone, Connan Mockasin, lots of stuff.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Currently and with past groups, I’ve done a bit of touring, US & Canada and once in London. I’ve been stationary in NYC for better or worse for the last few years and have some favorites here for sure; Baby’s All Right, Rough Trade, Nublu. I’ll be playing Union Pool in Brooklyn on January 19th.
